The Colombian Ambassador to the Netherlands Fernando Grillo met with the director of the port of Rotterdam Rene van der Plas

The Colombian Ambassador to the Netherlands Fernando Grillo, accompanied by the Colombian journalist Jorge Cura and Major Sergio Peñaranda, met with the director of the port of Rotterdam Rene van der Plas. The director made a presentation on the evolution, current status and future of the port of Rotterdam.

The port of Rotterdam has a length of 42 kilometers that goes from the city center to the sea. It has been ranked as number 11th in cargo volume worldwide and the first in Europe. In 2009 began the expansion of the port in the sea area, which was built artificially with sand extracted from the seabed. Then in 2015 the formal operation of

the new part of the port began. The engineering and design were carried out by Dutch companies, who also designed the islands known as La Palma in Dubai.

The port has been awarded by the world economic forum as the most innovative and intelligent port in the world for six consecutive years. In economic terms, the port generates its income from the rental of spaces and from the costs of using the port by vessels. Its automation processes are 96% efficient and loading and unloading takes an average of two hours, being highly efficient compared to other ports in Europe which takes about six hours.

Customs processes are adjusted to the laws of the European Union and the Netherlands, but under a business approach seeking the optimization of the port's resources.

Future strategic alliances are expected to be created with the port of Rotterdam in order to carry out joint work with the Colombian ports of Barranquilla and Buenaventura.
